Do I need a US Chess membership?

Yes. Because our tournaments are US Chess-rated, all players need an active US Chess membership. If you don't have one yet, joining is quick and easy. If your membership has expired, you can renew it online before registering. Once your membership is active, come back and complete your tournament registration.

How are sections determined?

You don't need to choose a section when you register. There will be an Open section. Additional sections will be based on the final field and Published Ratings, with U1400 and U800 as the target cutoffs. The TD may adjust cutoffs or add sections based on entries to create competitive groups.

Can adults and scholastic players both enter?

Absolutely. The Toledo Open is open to both adults and scholastic players. Sections are based on playing strength—not age—so whether you're an adult or a student, you'll generally be competing against players around your level.

Can I request a bye if I can't play every round?

Players may request up to one 1/2-point bye in any round except the final round. No 1/2-point bye is available in the final round. Players may request unlimited advance 0-point byes.

What is the cancellation/refund policy?

Players who notify Pawnstormers before the published Round 1 start time for their section receive a full refund. No refunds are given for no-shows or withdrawals at or after the published Round 1 start time for their section.
